1. The film was about to begin when we entered the hall.

What is the meaning of "about to" here? Does it mean "just happen"?

I'd also like to know whether there's a difference in usage between 'it would begin' and 'it was about to begin'

My grammar book says be about to/be to is used when the future can be controled by a human. Acording to this theory, 'I'm about to be thirty next month' is incorrect, because we can't control our ages. However, I found it a lot everywhere and sounds

"about to" would have to be an adverb I guess, but I'm having trouble anaylsing the sentence fully.
