Good question! Since I usually have this one wrong, I'll attempt an answer and wait for somebody to correct me. Good morning : from dawn to midday Good afternoon : from midday to sunset or sixish [that would be around 6:00 pm] Good evening : from sunset [or sixish] to bedtime As I said previously, I often had it wrong.

  • When I was staying in the UK, I often caught myself saying " good morning " at 1-2 pm because where I live it works quite differently.
  • Needless to say, sometimes I received a look of disapproval.

TanitGood morning: from dawn to midday
Good afternoon: from midday to sunset or sixish [that would be around 6:00 pm]
Good evening: from sunset [or sixish] to bedtime
These definitions sound entirely reasonable to me.

Thanks. Can you tell me the exact time? Then, I can confirm with it.

How about "good night"?

No, because there is no exact time. In the winter when the sun sets at 4:30 in the afternoon, then "good evening" might be appropriate as early as 5 p.m. In the summer, when the sun sets at 9:30, 5 might still be "afternoon."

Six is a reasonable dividing line, if the sun is still up.

4 pm is too early for "good evening," even in the winter. The prior suggestion of 6 pm is reasonable.

Interesting question.

I would probably say "good evening" until about 3 or 4 a.m., and then switch to "good morning."

Actually, 3:30 seems early for good morning - so let's say "good evening" as you answer the phone until 4 a.m.

Of course, this would only apply if you are confident that most peopel are calling from your time zone. If you are in Montreal and getting ca

u should ask ur boss how he/she wants u to greet the caller. or u can just say pick up and say "Hi Thank you for calling. How may I help you" or something else general. People dont usually read too much into the greeting unless it's odd so its better if u play it safe and keep it general.
