about the subjunctive

HI,

I wrote in another part of this site, but haven't gotten any answer yet. Can someone help me with this?

The following sentences are in the subjunctive mood. I speak like this and I write with it.

I recommend that you see a doctor.
I suggest that you walk for a mile.

I've been told that these forms are archaic. Does that mean that they shouldn't be used? Are there better ways of saying the same things?

Thanks,
MVB

HI,

Mister Micawber, what do you mean when you say "Please supply a link to that post"? How do I do that? I understand that I can't double-post, but how to supply a link, is my question.

MVBI recommend that you see a doctor.
I suggest that you walk for a mile.
Those are fine. This use of the subjunctive is far from archaic.
MVBAre there better ways of saying the same things?
No, but these are also natural:

I recommend seeing a doctor.
I suggest walking a mile.

Aspara GusIt seems you initially posted your question in your profile, so I don’t think that counts as double posting.
No, that is just a mistake.

You can add a link to your post simply by copying and pasting its URL.

HI,

What I initially did is that I wrote in the section "Basic Grammar Questions" (something like that). I didn't get a response since Feb. 24th, so I thought it okay to write again, but in another section "General Grammar Questions" (something like that). I got a response and am happy with it. I found out that I did some double posting without knowing. Sorry about that.

MVBNow, Mister Micawber, where is the the URL?
The URL for a webpage always appears in the bar of your browser at the top of the page. On the page I am typing on, for instance, this is the URL:

http: // www.EnglishForward.com /English/AddPost.aspx?ReplyToPostId=1738889&Quote=False,/English/AddPost.aspx?ReplyToPostId=1738889&Quote=False
