0hi guys,02br

00I have a question about the following dialogues. The following dialogues are the end of a conversation between Todd and Phil. I don't understand Todd used simple past when he said 'it 01u00was 02u00nice to meet you.' instead of 'it is nice to meet you.'02br

00.....02br
02br
01b00Todd: 02b00How much longer do you think you're going to stay? 02br
02br
01b00Phil: 02b00My contract is for another six months here, so I will stay that long and then maybe longer, I'm not sure. 02br
02br
01b00Todd: 02b00OK, well, anyway it 01u00was 02u00nice to meet you. 02br

01b00Phil: 02b00Oh, yeah, nice to meet you, too. 0-

0You can say 'it is nice to meet you' at the start of the conversation.02br

00By the time you've finished the conversation the moment of 'meeting' is in the past, so you say 'it was nice to meet you.'0-

0 What Nona says normally holds true for this case, but if Todd had heard about Phil before, or they had only communicated on the phone or by e-mail, for example, Todd could say "it is nice to meet you at last". 0-

0But Nona is still correct in that at the end of the conversation, the moment of "meeting" is over. You still would use the "It 01b00is02b00 nice to meet you at last" when they 01i00first02i00 started talking, not as they get ready to part. 0-

00Not necessarily. If they expect to see each other over the next weeks, "

0To avoid this problem, the alternative is "It's been nice meeting you". This will cover all time segments, 0-

0Hi,02br

00The phrase '. . . nice to 01i00meet 02i00you . . . ' is normally only used when we meet someone for the first time. The next time, you say 'Hello, it's nice to01i00 see02i00 you' and later, 'Bye-bye, it was nice to 01i00see02i00 you'.02br
