About superlative

In a grammar book, "the" should be used for superlative adjective, and in superlative adverb "the" is not needed.

I'm ok with that rule.

But in case of superlative adjective, there is the case with "the" superlative adjective and "without the" superlative adjective like the below examples.
[Those example sentences are from Webster's Leaner's Dictionary.]

? He chose the seat farthest from the door.
? We had a contest to see who could hit a golf ball the farthest.

Can you tell me why there is 'the' in one sentence, and 'without the' in the other sentence?
