"During the summer holidays, our class visited the old folks' home."

"old folks' home" is informal. More formally, you could say "retirement home".

Thanks, but I got confused, I say:

Last week was a holiday.

I mean, the "whole week" were holidays, not just "a holiday" for a day. You get what I mean?

If I say, "...was a holiday", doesn't it only "one holiday" in a week?

"Last week was a holiday" is understood to mean that the whole week was a holiday. Although "a holiday" looks like it should mean just one day, it can refer to any length of time.

You are right that "Last week was/were holidays" seems logical, but we don't say that.

Thanks your reply. Are you the Native speaker? Are you using British Eng or American English?

By the way, Can I say,

During the last holidays, John went on / for a trip.

Yes, I am a native speaker of British English. Americans tend to use "vacation" where the British would use "holiday".

"went on a trip" is better than "went for a trip".

"During the last holidays" is passable but not particularly elegant. If you have a name for the holidays then it would be better to use that. For example: "During the summer holidays..."
