About "sign on for someone" the phrasal verb

Hi,

One day, Bill Clinton stopped by to visit his uncle Buddy who at that time was in the mists of sorrow because his wife had contracted Alzheimer's Disease and therefore didn't know him for the most of the day. Bill said, " This is really hard, isn't it?" But surprisingly, Buddy said with a smile, "Yeah, it is, but I signed on for the whole load, and most of it were pretty good." What does Buddy mean, especially by the "I signed on for the whole load" part? Millions of thanks to you!
