About "After All"~

Hi, in my dictionary one of the many meanings of "after all" is "when you thought something different would happen", which I don not quite understand. Could anyone be kind enough as to clear that for me ? If we want to replace it with another word or phrase, what would it be? Thanks a lot!

"I did not go to the party after all." (I did not go to the party, although I expected to.)

Or: "After all that, I did not go to the party." (Because of what happened, I did not go to the party.)
