about "parting lives"

I read an article referring to parents’divorce. And the last line is:
"I hoped my father would return soon with the truck so we could empty the garage and leave the cryptic silence of parting lives behind."

I want to ask which is correct to understand the "lives":
a. the lives means the stage of life, before moving and after moving;
b. life= a living being, especially a person; so lives means each person in a family.
