About nouns after hypen

Good day every one!

Could somebody help me? I am wondering about noun after hypen.

For example; 3-day holiday, 5-inch ruler.

Why is the noun in hypenated word singular?

Thank you for the help. Emotion: smile

Top answer

Because it is a single item. There are: 1 ruler that measures 5 inches and 1 holiday that spans three days. The numbers are discribing the item, rather than have 5 rulers that measure in inches.

Units of measurement are in the singular when they come before the noun.

The man is six feet tall. He's a six-foot-tall man.
The boy is three years old. He's a three-year-old boy.
The trip took three days. It was a three-day trip.

But this applies to most other nouns too.
