about Notwithstanding

Hi, everyone.

I’m not quite sure how to use the word “notwithstanding”. In the dictionary it says the meaning is “in spite of”.

Where shall I use it---- At the beginning, or in the middle of a sentence? And sometimes I see some sentences using it as an adjective, why is that?

Thanks in advance!
