About "my birthday"

Do we say,

Last Sunday evening, John celebrated his tenth / 10th birthday. His father threw him a birthday party. He was very excited and invited many friends to his house.

He decorated his living room with ribbons and some colourful balloons. His mother prepared a vanilla cake for him. In the evening, his friends came with some beautifully wrapped gift to him. He was pleased to receive it.

When it was time to cut the cake, all his friends gather at / around the dinning table and sang a birthday song to him. John closed his eyes, made a wish and blew out the flickering candles. There were some sausages, chicken wings, fried noodles and egg sandwiches. They ate the delicious food and enjoyed the games. / They ate and enjoyed the party / They ate and enjoyed playing games.

By evening time / When the evening came, the guests had to leave. John bade everyone farewell / bare farewell to everyone and thanked / thanked them for the presents.
