About middling

Hi all .I came across a puzzling piece of explanation on synonyms of AVERAGE like below

MIDDLING refers to a ranking between average and mediocre (from American Heritage Dictionary )

So could anyone help me sort them out more clearly than dictionary do?

The dictionary definition seems pretty clear to me. mediocre >>>> middling >>>> average.

And My puzzle is : Why does the rank exist ? Is it meaning mediocre nearer to the very middle of a quality?

hope my idea gets across... Sorry, I don't understand your question.

'Middling' is close to average. 'Mediocre' is a lot below average.
