About hyphenating words like "limited edition, first edition, wind up"

I have made up the sentences below.

(1a) The vase is a limited edition.

(1b) The vase is limited-edition.

(2a) The book is a first edition.

(2b) The book is first-edition.

(3a) The old toy is a wind up.

(3b) The old toy is wind-up.

Most of my non-native English speaking friends think all the "a" versions are correct. They are not sure if the hyphenated ones are right when they are used as adjectives.

Please help me. Thank you very much for your time and help.
