About "hand"

I think in English "hand" is used in many different ways.

This word, "hand" itself means not only part of body but also send or give someting to someone.

Then, what's the meaning of this phrase, "on one's hand"?

I see this phrase in this sentence: Romans had lots of time on their hands.

I'd like to know the specific meaning of this phrase, "on one's hand" and the other hand's meaning. Emotion: smile
