About good expression

I am not sure whether the following sentence is acceptable.
Could you tell me whether it is okay?
Thank you.

It's hard to tell age of today’s people. *My yardstick is too old to accurately measure their age, so I mistake it as three or four years younger, even ten sometimes.

* The reason why I wrote like 'My yardstick is too old ~' is because the narrator of the sentence is old.

Top answer

It is not a good analogy - yardsticks measure distance (height), not time (age). It's hard for me to estimate the ages of young people. When I was young, people did not grow as tall or as quickly.

(I revised it again.)

Recently, it is hard to tell people's age for me. Like an old watch, I cannot feel the lapse of time enough to accurately guess other's age, so I usually underestimate ages of Women, of course, and men also, by three or four years, and sometimes even ten years.

Thank you very much. By the way, I wonder how it sounds like to the native speakers. Could you tell me whether it coveys emotional feelings to some extent or just deliver meaning of words? (Please just give me your honest opinion as it is.)

The analogy of the old watch gives it more color and emotional appeal.
But I think of an old watch as being more accurate than the new ones!
