About fishing

Can I say,

(a) Last Sunday, Peter and John brought their (fishing) rods and pails before going fishing / to fish. He and his friends went fishing near the river. (Do you think isn't repeated?)

(b) When they started fishing, Peter heard someone / somebody shouting for help. He ran to the river and saw a boy drowning. The boy was very shocked and scared in the river.

(c) He quickly jumped into / in the river and tried to save the drowning boy. Luckily, the boy was unhurt. He thanked Peter and John for saving his life. They had done a good deed.
