About "each of"

I want to know the different meaning between both following sentences.

1. I inserted each of bolts into each of sockets.
2. I inserted each of bolts into one of sockets.

Top answer

Neither of these sentences is quite right. 1) I inserted each of bolts into each of sockets would suggest that you had the same number of bolts and sockets and inserted one bolt into each socket. If you said I inserted a bolt into each socket it would get the point across.

  • Neither of these sentences is quite right.

  • 2) I inserted each of bolts into one of sockets suggests that either you stuffed all the bolts into one socket together, or that you tried all the bolts in the same socket, one at a time.
  • You could say I inserted all of the bolts into one of the sockets , or I tested all of the bolts in one of the sockets .
