About "driving back to hometown"

Can I write like this way:

John and his family are going to hometown. He plans to celebrate New Year with his family. His children are eager to celebrate (it).

There is heavy traffic on a highway. All drivers drive carefully. There is a long queue at the toll-booths. They are patient to wait for their turn on the highway,

After that, John stops / stops his car at the rest area. They are having lunch there. Finally, John and his family continue their journey.
