About "Broken"

Hi,

Among these, which ones are correct?

1. My car was broken last night.

2. My car was broken down last night.

3. My car broke last night.

4. My car broke down last night.

They're all correct in the right context.

However, we don't usually say that the [whole] car is broken.

If the car is not operational, it broke down in the past and is now broken down.

The cause could be that the fan belt broke, and is now broken.

Why didn't you pick me up last night? (reply) My car broke down. My car was broken down.
