About an incident happened

Can I say,

(a) One day, Aunt Sumitra was ironing her husband's shirt. Suddenly, the telephone was ringing. She quickly replied / answered the telephone.

(b) After that, she sat on the sofa and answered the telephone. She left the hot iron on her husband's shirt. She chattered happily over the telephone for quite some time.

(c) Suddenly, she sensed a burning smell. She rushed to save the shirt but it was too late. The shirt was burnt with a large hole.
