'about': adverb or preposition?

Hi,

I'm wondering if 'about' in the following sentence is an adverb or preposition:

I was about to cry.

By the way, I saw it defined as an adverb in Webster's New World Children's Dictionary, but as a preposition in Webster's New World Student's Dictionary. I wonder if they made a mistake in the former. In both, the definition given is 'almost ready'.

In the sentence you gave, I beleive It's an adverb.
