"Five stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange",

where volume came to 226.6 million shares, compared with 245.3 million at the same time on Wednesday



The quoted sentance I have read many times when I visit some finance website but I still dont know what is the meaning of "fell for every one that rose on..."
