It could mean almost anything. Someone is arranging a date for him on the weekend, and he has to go make a phone call to get information about her or about the date. He is hiring a model for a life drawing class, or an actress for a commercial, or somebody to walk his dog.

I haven't heard it recently either, I guess. Do today's women still use powder in their makeup?

They sell powder-based foundation in little compacts with mirrors, and I know (from my reading) that you're supposed to "finish" your makeup with translucent powder, which (I think) comes pressed in compacts but is also sold loose to be put on with a big brush.
