Thank you very much for your answer. Could you please tell me the difference between them?

1.He goes swimming about twice a week. Probably the most common.
2.He goes swimming around twice a week. Probably the second most common.
5. He goes swimming twice a week or so. This has the feeling of less certainty, more like guesswork.

These have the feeling of making some sort of mathematical estimate:
3.He goes swimming roughly twice a week.
4.He goes swimming app

Hi, AlpheccaStar,

"He goes swimming twice a week or so." [This has the feeling of less certainty, more like guesswork.]
Do the other words like around, roughly, about or approximately, etc. have the feeling of more certainty than 'or so'?

Can I use 'roughly' instead of approximately here?
"How much will it cost, approximately/roughly?"

Thanks a lot.

"or so" sounds like an afterthought.

Yes. We sometimes ask for a rough approximation, just to know a ballpark amount.
"Roughly" might imply a greater degree of latitude.
