"It makes being a teacher about the best job in the world"

I don't understand why 'above' was inserted into the original sentence.

"It makes being a teacher the best job in the world" seemed to be more acceptable to me.

Could anyone tell me the diffrence between two sentence?

many thanks in advance.

Hi Anon Your sentence states an opinion. In your sentence, the word "about" is similar in meaning to "almost". Adding "about" makes "the best" less absolute, and thus the statement has a lower risk of coming across as being dogmatic and inflexible.

  • Saying "about the best job" basically allows for or indirectly acknowledges the possibility that someone else might think that some other kind of job is "the best", and/or possibly the speaker wants to indicate that there are a couple of other jobs that might be just as good.
  • Saying "being a teacher is the best job in the world" in essence presents the speaker's opinion as an absolute fact.
