aborting

Hi,

"I would like to explain the reasons for the aborting of my graduate studies at Columbia University."

Is the usage of 'aborting' in the above example acceptable? Thank you.

Top answer

The word suggests to me a sudden and rather unpleasant ending. I suggest eg I would like to explain why I did not complete my graduate studies at Columbia University.

or

"......explain the reasons why I dropped out..." ?

Yikes, no! That's opening up a mine field of associations! Use the verb 'abort' and all its forms only for the termination of pregnancies and you won't go wrong with that word. OK. Sometimes people say that a computer program aborted, and sometimes a military operation is aborted, and ther

I hesitated over using the word for precisely the reason you pointed to. That's why I posted the question in the first place. Thanks.
