Able was I ere I saw Elba

What does the palindrome "Able was I ere I saw Elba" mean? Able was I, before I saw Elba = I was okay before I saw or came to Elba, in reference to Napolean's exile to Elba. Is my deciphering correct? Please let me know. Thanks.
