Able to or be able to?

Hi. Please help. Which is correct? If both can be correct under the right circumstances, what is the difference for the sentences below? I think what I am struggling with is the use of the phrases "make them able to" and "make them be able to" before some kind of verb that is suitable.

1. The goal of this lesson is to make them able to solve some basic algebraic forumulas.

2. The goal of this lesson is to make them be able to solve some basic algebraic formulas.
