Abdicate

Personally, I quite like this word 'abdicate'. This word appeared in a newspaper today.

It is as follows:

The sultan abdicated in favor of his son.

What does it mean? Does it mean that his son succeeded to the throne.

usually, we succeed sb/sth or we succeed to sb/sth?

Top answer

Hi; It means that the sultan willing resigned his power and handed it all over to his son. In 1936, the King of England, Edward VIII, loved an American woman, Mrs. Wallis Simpson, so deeply that he wanted to marry her.

Do you possibly mean "acceded to the throne"? You didn't actually include a quote on "succeeded."

I wouldn't say that we succeed to sombody, or that we succeed something.
