Abbreviation - Mr or Mr.?

I read somewhere that if abbreviation includes the first and last letter of the word then full stop should not be used e.g. Mr for Mister. But many software and websites require Mister or Doctore to be abbreviated as Mr. and Dr.! Can someone please suggest what is the right way of writing it? Thanks
