Abbreviation followed by Semicolon?

Can the period in a semicolon substitute for the period following an abbreviated word, or do you need both the period and semicolon punctuates? For example: They can be found on 4th Ave.; but the downtown store has them as well. (I don't know if the semicolon is appropriate in that sentence. Feel free to draft your own!) Steve

No, it can't. There is no period in a semi-colon; the dot on top is simply part of a whole. The sentence would be grmmatical in the US if you removed the "but."
