Abbreviating Decades

Should one use a preceding apostrophe when abbreviating decades (e.g. I was born in the '50s) or is this unnecessary?

Top answer

You should use it. The apostrophe stands in for the missing digits, which in this case are the 1 and 9 of the 1950s. People will often write it as the 50's, but this is incorrect.
