Abate and mitigate

Hi

Could these two words (verbs) be used with the noun chances? Any other typical verbs please?

The severe storm abated the chances of their meeting.

The severe storm mitigated the chances of their meeting.

Thanks,

Tom

I'm not fond of either word in this context. I would use a word like diminished, impeded, reduced, or curtailed. I recommend a thesaurus.
