Vocabulary

Abajur

Hi.
I wonder if the French version of table lamp (lampshade) which is abajur is used in English too.
However English dictionaries do not have this word in their entries, but I have heard some native speakers use it.
I wonder if any native speaker could let me know if they have ever heard of abajur for the lampshade?
Thank you for your time and help in advance
Cheers

Hi,

A table lamp is the whole fixture.

A lampshade is just the part that shields your eyes from the bulb. eg the top part here

I usually just say 'a lamp'.

Hello Hrsanei,
The French word for lampshade is "abat-jour".
You asked whether table lamp or lampshade was used more often. The answer is, it depends. They are two separate elements that make up the whole.
If you are speaking of the entire thing you would say "the lamp" or "the table lamp". If you are speaking only about the shade, then "lampshade" would be used.
