a/an European company

Hello, which statement is correct:

-a European company
-an European company - I used this version applying general rule for the "an" ..till someone told me this is an exception and the first version would be right

Please tell me your opinion (and the reasons).

Thank you in advance!

A European company. Although EUROPEAN starts with a vowel, the first SOUND is "Yoo", which starts with a consonant sound, so you use A not AN. If EUROPEAN was pronounced "OO-ro-pean", without the intiial "yih" sound, you would use AN.

Hi
'a European company' is the correct choice.
Reason: 'european' starts with a Y sound. Y isn't a vowel, it's a demi-vowel.
