A/An article

Hello,

I read that the form 'an' is used before individual letters spoken with a vowel sound: an L-plate, an MP

an SOS, an "x". But L, M, S, and x are not vowels. Could you please explain to me what is mean under a vowel sound?

Top answer

an MP (pronounced an em-pi) an L-plate (pronounced an el-plate) The key in choosing between an and a lies in the pronounciation rather than the spelling.

BTW, I made a mistake in my previous post, it should have been "the key to choosing"
