A:3 Do they all mean the same thing, please

Hi,

A) Please do not take it ill.
B) Please do not take it to heart.
C) Please do not mind it.
D) Please do not feel bad about it.

[Do they all mean the same thing, please? Could we also say things for eg, 'my words', 'my remarks', 'what I'm going to say' etc. in place of 'it' in the examples above?]

Top answer

They are roughly the same thing, except (C) 'take to heart' can be used of positive things as well as negative, as it means to consider something significant. For example, Bob gives Jane some good advice, but if he felt Jane could not follow that advice he might then say not to take his advice to heart. The 'it' can refer forwards (as you suggest) as well as backwards, depending on the context.
