A young man with spider like abilities

A young man with spider like abilities fights crime as a superhero in New York City while trying to have a normal personal life.

I think the unlined phrase would originally be "A young man with abilities like spider."
I'd like to know how and why this inversion occur.

Thank you in advance for your help.

It is a hyphen not a dash. The hyphen is not relevant to spoken English. It does not make any difference to the pronunciation.
