Essay & Composition Writing

A writing activity

Hello teachers!

I have planned a writing activity for upper intermediate students.

Please check any grammatical errors here!

Thanks in advance:D

Prepare four sentences consist of one topic sentence and three supporting sentences. In a piece of paper, write each sentence. If there are 20 students in the class, make 5 sets of 4 sentences with different stories so that every student can have one piece of paper each. Create a web-site or a bulletin board where students post their writing and give peer feedback freely. Make sure that the teacher is able to check when comments were posted and who commented. It may facilitate the teacher's grading.

1. Hand out a sentence-written piece of paper to every student randomly.

2. On the board, write down five key words of the stories that are written in students' paper. Those will be Amy, Chris, Adam, my father and my grandmother.

3. Give students time to form groups with those who have the same key word. There will be four students in each group. Students are allowed to speak in English only when finding their rest of the group members.

4. When all students are in the group, let them discuss which is a topic sentence among supporting sentences.

5. When students decide on their topic sentences, let them be checked whether they are right. Make students create two more sentences to each of the sentence in a group.

6. That's all for the classroom activity. Students have homework posting their writing on the Internet bulletin board. They are free to write comments on other teams. To encourage students' motivation and participation after the class, the three most active students will be given some extra points.

To prevent free-riding, focus more on the less active students. Ask them questions to induce their actual participation during the class. If necessary, call the students over discreetly and check their writing.

I have no idea what you mean by ' Amy, Chris, Adam, my father and my grandmother', so I have deleted it. In fact, I don't understand what is going on in much of this. This is what I am presuming below: Each student has one sentence.

  • I have no idea what you mean by ' Amy, Chris, Adam, my father and my grandmother', so I have deleted it.
  • In fact, I don't understand what is going on in much of this.
  • This is what I am presuming below: Each student has one sentence.
  • Each sentence has one key word.
  • So there are 4 key words for each story (which has 4 sentences).
