A 'would' question

Hi Everyone,

I have yet ANOTHER curly question.

This one relates to a sentence from the 'Life' series workbooks: upper intermediate, unit 7b (if anyone's interested).

Why do we say this:

'Would you rather walk, or would you prefer we went in the car?

Students had to choose either - go / went - to complete the sentence.
Is this to do with the subjunctive, or something else.

Students wanted to know why.

I got stuck * rolling eyes *.

Thanks
CC.

Right. 'Prefer' is one of a set of verbs (demand, recommend, suggest, etc.) that are followed by a 'that' clause and subjunctive or (BrE) indicative or 'should'.

Thanks Mr. M.

My 'curly question' is more about - my thoughts - rather than the question itself. Lol.

Thank you for clarifying what I originally thought. I'm now looking up subjunctive. This is definitely NOT one of my strong grammar brain chips. I've never had to teach subjunctive so I have to learn it in depth. I only know the skeletal version.
