A word you say / a word of what you say

Hello everyone,
Which of these sentences is correct
1) I don't understand a word you say
2) I don't understand a word of what you say
The 1st one seems more "natural" but the second one seems to me more gramatically "complete" but maybe because I'm trying to translate word by word from my mother tongue

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment, Fab. I would likely say the first and write the second.
