Hi.
All my consultations with all my dictionaries all day long have failed me all too cruelly.
I now turn to you. The word that has slipped my mind means a systematic study of signs or symbols. I looked up 'demotics' but it was defined differently. The word I am looking for would be spelled very similarly.
