A word required for a situation

Hi

I need a word for a situation.

If a (very) unexpected incident takes place (a person becomes suddently rich or a wife walks out on her husband) and that incident is kept a secret. People have no idea what’s happened, but as time passes, there start_______________________ about the incident.

[I mean the state before rumours...hushed talks kind of thing]

Could you offer me a good word for a situation like this please? What about:

Hushed talks

Undercurrent feelings

Insinuation

1) There's a lot of hushed talk that he has won a hefty lottery.

2) There is a lot of insinuation that she has left this house forever--and her illness is just an excuse.

3) There's an undercurrent feeling (feelings?) that he has pawned his house.

Many thanks for your time,

Tom

Many thanks, Clive.

So, this is correct and natural?

There is a lot of speculation that he has won a hefty lottery.
