I wouldn't say they are less formal, just slightly different.
Pet doesn't really apply to people, in BrE anyway, other than in a rather old fashioned sexual term.
Nuzzle means to push your face and mouth against something, not kissing, and yes I guess we do it to our kids but it sounds weird to hear it in this context. I associate it with animals.
