A word for a person always playing safe

Yo!
Somebody please give me a word, and please make it as insulting as possible, for a person always playing safe, or the practice of doing so. "Calculating" and "unhip" is the best I could come up with by mice elf, but it obviously only covers a very small part of what I feel for the said individual/practice. "A (cowardly) maneuvering pig," would be the general sentiment.
I need it to describe an author and his (or his publisher's, whatever) probably practical, out of doubt pathetic custom of deleting the paragraphs his American public might perceive "controversial."

Fancy enough, I like it, but I was looking for something more on the line of the German word "sicher-something" I vaguely remember.
[nq:1]But frankly I can't see too much wrong with always playing safe. 'Always Play Safe' is the closest thing I have to a motto.[/nq]
Good for you but sometimes it's just repugnant. For my context, if you care, GoTo

Invertebrate, gutless that's more like it. You read my mail.

Incidentally, before I posted that I had a quick riffle through some glossaries of specialist slang (gamblers', bond-traders' and con-men's) hoping to find something more colourful. No luck, but in the introduction to The Big Con by the late David Maurer, Luc Sante explains why Maurer, a linguist who specialised in the study of argots, had written
