A wild stab

Please, what´s the meaning of "wild stab" in this sentence? Any relationship with "back stab"?

"It was just a wild stab. When I saw him wince at the first mention of her name, I knew that I had struck home."

Top answer

No, the meaning is really not related at all. A "wild stab" usually refers to a guess in which one has no idea at all and would be completely relying on chance to get even close to the right answer. " I hope this helps.

It's a mixed metaphor. Most common are "stab in the dark" or "wild guess".
