Yes, I would agree on this point. But the reason why I asked this question stems from the fact that I took this sentence out of a reliable source - the Oxford dictionary.

On second thought, the plural form may be favored in BrE. As an American, I instinctively inclined toward the singular verb, which, in my opinion, is preferable when it comes before variety.

There are a variety of games. (awkward in AmE)
A variety of games are available. (sounds OK)

I share the same opinion. As far as I am concerned, I also incline to use it that way, or at least, I have seen it written like that a lot of times.
