When usingRANGE, is it singular or plural?

The range of products IS/ARE impressive.

A wide range of people BUYS/BUY cars.

Do THE and A make a difference (as in THE/A number of)?

'Range' is singular, and the choice of article makes no difference, but I do see a lot of native text which uses notional/proximal concord (i.e., the verb is plural because the noun before it is plural).
