Are or is?

I am really confused. Please help.

English presents us all with countless quandaries of this kind. Just go for what sounds good if you cannot change it to an unproblematic form like "This lot has a wide range of cars in it." If you use the form of the verb that goes with the nearest noun, it usually sounds better: "A wide range of cars are here." Don't feel bad. Native speakers are just as confused as you are. It depends on what you mean, I guess. If you want to emphasize the group, it's "is". If you want to emphasize the cars, it's "are". I would default to "are" myself, unless I had a good reason to make
